MSP Visit to South Ayrshire School Clothing Bank

MSP visit to South Ayrshire School Clothing Bank

Jeane Freeman at the Back to School Clothing Bank Published:  Thursday 18 August 2016

Jeane Freeman, MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley visited South Ayshire’s School Clothing Bank to meet the volunteers and make a donation.  Now that the schools are returning after summer, the School Clothing Bank will be closing. Ms Freeman thanked the volunteers for all their work and thanked the many local businesses who have acted as distribution points.

The School Clothing Bank started in July 2015, and supplies school uniforms, bags, gym kits and shoes to children in need. Last year they helped over 100 children from the poorest families to start school with decent, new school uniforms. They have collection points in Maybole, Ayr, Troon, Alloway and Coylton.

Jeane Freeman said; “I have supported this organisation since its launch. The best kind of help comes when communities come together to support each other, and the South Ayrshire School Clothing Bank has been set up by the community itself, to help those in greatest need. “The cost of kitting out a child to go to school can be prohibitive for many families. This week the Scottish Government launched a new consultation on ending child poverty. Our ambition is to end the blight of child poverty and tackle deep-seated inequality. “We aim to build on efforts already underway, such as free school meals and our commitment to the Living Wage of £8.25 an hour. Supporting initiatives like the School Clothing Bank is just one practical step we can take towards that goal of ending child poverty.”
